140 LOAVES OF BREAD AND 135 MUFFINS DONATED
On Thursday, March 15, Chamberlin’s third through fifth grade students participated in the Life Skills Bread Baking Program offered by the King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vermont. We had a special assembly at 8:30 a.m., in the Chamberlin gym to introduce this very worthwhile community service program. A baking instructor from King Arthur Flour Company came to demonstrate how to make basic hearth bread. All students learned that with a little baking instruction and a little science, they can bake their own bread.
Students kept one loaf to enjoy at home and brought the other back to school to donate to local community organizations. Thank you families for helping your children bake and bring the bread back to school on Monday, March 19. There were over 140 loaves of bread to share. This is one of the ways that Chamberlin students can reach out to others in need this year. We will be delivering the loaves of bread to the organizations in need on Monday.
Second graders also participated in their classrooms baking muffins to contribute to families and children in need. They baked 135 muffins.
Great Job, Chamberlin Students!! You have much to be proud of!!

ROCK OUR WORLD AT CHAMBERLIN SCHOOL
The fourth grade students in Mr. Provost's class participated in Rock Our World, an international project involving 43 schools around the world from six continents. This project focused on healthy eating and sustainability. The students came up with solutions on how healthy eating can reduce their carbon footprint. They created weekly Garageband music with Ms. Matthews, researched the new Food Plate, and listened and learned while a sustainability educator from Shelburne Farms spoke to them about the food groups and sustainability. Our own school nurse, Mrs. Farrell spoke to the students about the Food Plate and the importance of balanced nutritious meals.
In order to teach the Chamberlin community the benefits of healthy eating, the students baked enough bread to serve to our entire school population during lunch. It is our hope that they continue this service learning monthly. They also made reusable lunch sacks that will be sold during parent/teacher conferences and the Scholastic Book Fair next week.
Chamberlin students reflect on their work creating a healthy, more sustainable place to live in South Burlington while reducing their carbon footprint.
The music video below, "The Life We Got" is a production by the band Alma Desnuda that was written just for Rock Our World. You will see the students' contributions with their vocal tracks and their video clips. Look for Vermont and our students!

Chamberlin Students "Making their Mark" to create a better world!
Chamberlin Hurricane Relief Collection
Many of our VT neighbors experienced great loss from the impact of Tropical Storm Irene. In response, Chamberlin families donated food, toiletries, and pet supplies to benefit the Waterbury Food Shelf. Pictured here is Mrs. Simpson's 2nd grade class with the donated items. Thank you to our guidance counselor, Mr. Melen, for organizing this wonderful community connection!

4th Grade Rain Garden
4th graders in Mr. Provost's class, Mrs. Detterman's class, and Mrs. Tan's class worked with Justin Kenney from the Chittenden County Stream Team to create a rain garden. This garden, in front of the school, will absorb up to 2 inches of stormwater run off from our school roof. Rain gardens improve water quality and prevent erosion. What a great learning experience for their science unit, Land and Water!

First Day at Chamberlin
